If you do adjust your own soundpost, you have to loosen the strings to to make room to wiggle the post. Otherwise you risk cracking the top. I would leave this stuff up to a luthier or someone with a lot of experience. Like many, I have two soundposts - one for winter, one for summer - that are different lengths and a little different in width. Twice a year I go to the bass shop and change them out, and it makes a HUGE difference with my very temperamental bass in feel and sound.
