Well, you should try Dave Gage's shop, since he's one of the "inventor's" (it ain't called the Gage Realist for nothing). They'll have other pickups, bows, quivers, strings and about 80 or 90 basses for sale. Dave is on Walker St. between Church and Broadway.
For strings, music, cheapish bows etc. try Ideal Music (I think they're on West 22nd St now)or Woodwinds and Strings on 23rd between 5th and 6th.
The 48th St stuff is mostly for plank.

If you're looking for a bass or bow, there's some stuff outside the city (but accessible by public transport):
Kolstein's - Baldwin Long Island
Jeff Bollbach - Freeport LI
Arnold Schnitzer - Yorktown Heights (I know he's moving, check his website for an address change)
Bass Garden/Geoff Morrow - Yonkers
