If all you want to do is play like either Haden or Mingus, you don't need to study with anybody. Just get alla their records and take off alla their sh*t.
Being a jazz bassist is more about trying to get to what YOU sound like, not being a bad copy of someone else.
As far as teachers, there are some excellent ones in NYC. I've been studying with my teacher, Joe Solomon for about 7 years now. There's an article in the LESSONS section at talkbass.com if you want to check out what he's all about.
