Believe it or not but an ordinary permanent marker pen works on non-ebony fingerboards as well ! I can`t see any problem with Bob`s shoe dye idea (basically the same thing) but if you happen to have a marker pen lying round El Ranchero it might be worth giving it a try first . Yet again , can`t see a problem with your verneer idea but if it doesn`t work it`d probably be best to take the bass to a luthier , have them plug the hole completely then re-ream it to the right size.
