Every time I get into a situation where I have to site read, I dread it. The truth is, at least for me, that it's easier to site read on upright bass than it is to do on electric, because when studying upright bass, you learn the fingerings before anything else. It was easy for me because all I had to do was apply what I learned from upright fingerings to electric, and I had no problem.
For someone who is new at this like yourself, my first suggestion is to look at the key signature. If you know the key signature, half of the problem is taken care of for you, because all of the fingerings you will need will be in that scale.
Expert reading is something that is acquired over time. I'm no expert at reading myself, but I've learned enough to stay on my game and in my college jazz orchestra.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
