Thanks for the follow-up! Indeed you are correct about reading techniques. I'm curious, have you ever tried upright (double) bass? If you're reading abilities on electric are up to par, you might want to try doubling on upright.

Most bass players I know (especially those who are good at reading) have started on upright doubled on electric. I, along with most of the people in this forum, have done the opposite, start on electric and then pick up the upright later on down the road. It's something I kinda regret doing. I have a feeling that if I had started on upright earlier, my reading abilities on electric might have been a little more second nature.

Upright bass is really a blast to play! I think you'd enjoy it! Especially if you get one of those nifty electric uprights!!!
