I've got a Kahler tremolo on an old B.C. Rich Warlock bass and it's pretty freaky. it gave me horrible tuning problems until I replaced the nut with a GraphTech Trem-Nut and installed some Sperzel locking tuners. now it works great. you can do some damn scary dive bombs and wild vibrato effects, not to mention raising the pitch to squealing levels. I guess a lot of "high-brow" bassists would consider a bass tremolo a silly toy, but hey why should guitarists have all the fun.

one thing tho, I'm not aware that Kahler ever made 5-string versions of their bass tremolos

Kahler is still around but they are currently only making their 2300 flatmount tremolo for guitars. check the link below. your best bet is to email Kahler and find out if they ever made a 5-string tremolo and then start checking the used market and eBay and other online auctions and whatnot
