: My question is: Can I get a good tone with a quality preamp direct to a small
: 500 to 800 watt two cabinet power mixer PA?
: Considering my interest in many instruments this would work out very well for
: me as opposed to buying seperate bass and guitar amps.
: Also, space is a problem as well.

Another option:
I do not have a bass amp anymore. I use the Bass Pod by Line6 and run it into whatever PA I am using. For smaller venues, I run my Pod into a Carvin 600W power amp and into the Carvin Redeye 2x10 cabinet. The Bass Pod is a real jewel in my opinion. Many of the amplifier sounds it has are very authentic sounding, and so is serving me well in the studio as well as live. Also... at only about a pound or two in weight - it is finally the portability I have been looking for all these years in a bass rig!
