If your conclution turns out to be correct, I wouldn't complain that other people play games instead of learning how to play, since then we'd all have a job playing bass, right? ;)

I think you are right though, that people don't learn to play as much as before. I think it has less to do with online gaming and such though. I think it's more of a way of thinking nowdays. If it takes more then a week or two to learn, it's not worth doing becous it's considered a hassle. This goes for people of all ages.

Think about it... Almost none devotes their whole life to become good at whatever they are doing, may it be music, martial arts or even whatever they do for a living.

Partly I think society has a blame in this...
Nowdays it's considered "bad" or lazy to have a job being, let's say a philosopher. Hence we have no real philosophers anymore. Shure we have people who think about heavy things, but this is usually at their spare time. For just a couple of hundred years ago you could actually get payed for that. Now it seems most people have forgotten that what led development to where it is today (for better and worse) is mostly derrived from what philosophers dreamt up a long time ago. Same thing is happening with music and musicians. So as you say, we might be a dying species.

If you ever get the question what you do for a living and answer that you are a musicians. Most people answer "Cool.... Then you don't have to get up in the morning like the rest of us, eh?"
I could settle for cool... but many people add that extra bit of sacrasm to it.

How depressing.
