To be perfectly honest the only problem I read in your message is that you are having a little case of the first band jitters. This is perfectly normal. As far as not being able to read I would imagine most bass players can't, I've been playing in bands for years and no one has ever asked me to read anything.
As far as impovising goes, that's the thing you learn by playing in a band.

Overall it sounds like you are in exactly the same position that most every new bass player finds themselves in. We've all been there and survived and you will too.

Go put that ad out. Be honest with the people who call and you'll probably be surprised at how many people will still invite you to play.

Best of luck. And I'm willing to bet that in 6 months from now when you've been playing with a steady band and have found you've become a good bass player you'll look back at this and laugh.
