There's a bunch of them out there in that price range. Try as many as you can before you buy, using the bass you will be using with the amp. I just got an SWR Workingman's 12 and I love it. The tonal range is great. Easily the range of my SM400 but in one neat portable package. You can get more powerful amps but volume don't mean that much. A loud amp with limited range just means a bunch of people can hear how muddy it sounds.

Another awesome amp is the (Eden) Nemesis 2x10 combo. Both of these are great for practice and small to medium gigs. Both can handle a low B really well if you are into 5-string. I'm just an old fart bar-room bass player and the real selling point for me was the weight, 47 pounds for the SWR and around the same for the Nemesis.

But play them before you buy. Take care.
