I find it helps when I make myself sit down and transcribe something. It makes
you listen, and it's great practice at notation. Doing something new is great for
getting you out of a rut as well.
I recently sat in with a band local band I hadn't played with or even listened
to that much. I got a CD of them and went to work. I listend for a while, then
made a note of the changes. Then I notated any special figures that I thought
needed to be played note for note. Every night I played along with it and by
the next weekend I was ready to go.
It was a great thing for me because it got me playing something different, and
there were a few good licks that I can add to my repertoire.
