: Ok guys I have a question. This is somthing that Ive been contemplating for a long time and I dont know what I should do. I play alot of slap bass stuff but I've always wanted a fretless bass as well. I have a regular bass that im playing on but Im really tempted to pull the frets out and make it a fretless bass. Would this really be a good idea? Thanx.

Taylor,
I wouldn't pull the frets from your bass's neck, to be honest...

Jaco Pastorius notwithstanding, it's not a good idea to pull the frets from a bass neck, since the frets add structural integrity to the neck; without them - especially if you don't fill the fret slots - you can run into a lot of problems with neck straightness and stability.

If you have a bass with a bolt-on neck, you can get a fretless neck, which will work *much* better than trying to rework a regular neck.

You might want to think in terms of getting a second bass if you're serious about learning fretless.

Hope that helps!

-Bob
