For years I played with a 45 watt 15in combo, but I like to have distorted tone so this might not work for you. Recently I bought a 200 watt combo and have been pretty happy with it though I rarely put it up past 4 or 5.
I'm not sure that the bigger is better line is right. I have had occassions to use big 350 and 400 watt amps and I found that when you turn them down too much they loose their tone. I think the reason this happens is that speakers not only have a maximuim rating but also a minimium rating, below which they are not driven correctly. A big amp needs powerful speakers and there not going to function correctly if you turn the amp down too much. I would also guess that when you turn a big amp down too much its not going to produce all of those nice harmonics that are so much a part of a good sound.
I may be all wet on this, so I'll gladly defer to those who more knowledgable.

Bob
