Rob, if you're thinking of building your own bass, I say go for it! As for the
woods, that's very subjective, but, I'd say you can't go wrong with alder. It's
got a nice warm sound and not too much sustain. I personally don't like an excessive amount of sustain, but, that's just me. Go to www.warmoth.com They
have a great section about different woods and their sound qualities. As for pickups, again this is up to you. Passives will be much less of a headache as far as batteries are concerned, but, actives do have two main advantages: Low/no noise and instant onboard tone control. Bartolinis seem to be very high
on the quality list. If you install J-type pups you can always change to another brand if you don't like the ones you installed originally. I like the
bolt on neck too... you can always change to a different wood; or even go fretless!
