I can't say I'm much of a Metallica fan, but I have listened to them often over the years. While they are likely the best at what they do, their music is hardly a showcase for a bassist of any sort. Remember, a bassist can only be judged by the musicians he plays with. It seems to me Mr. Newsted played the parts that were asked of him, and as well as could be expected. It is a well known fact that the Hetfield/Ulrich power axis in Metallica calls the musical shots in the band.

Not looking to make enemies here, but it seems this Newsted fella is taking a lot of heat for having done a job very well in a band that certainly didn't suffer from his presence. Metallica is just simply a band that doesn't have room for a "great" bassist(kinda like Van Halen), the fact that the bass was barely audible on most of their early records is a testament to this. BIG guitars, BIG drums, BIG ANGRY vocals, small bass....if everything were BIG, there would be no frame of reference as to what "BIG" really is. It's too bad our team(GO BASS!!!!) suffers in this equation, but that's a decision that Mr. Hetfield and Mr. Ulrich made, not Mr Newsted(otherwise he would have stayed and the others would have been fired).

I can't imagine what a Jaco, or Pino Palladino, Rocco Prestia, Alain Caron, or even Billy Sheehan(ya need ROOM to play all those widdly notes...) would do in a band like metallica, other than get the lobotomy, pick the downstrokes, and watch the checks clear......

Hopefully their new bassist will be happy with the "space" he's given. At least the gig pays better than the average club date.........

Peace.
