It ultimately boils down to personal preference. Jaco did some great stuff with a four string, tuning down to C (Check out Hejira and Don Juan's Reckless Daughter albums). But I love a five string, providing you can find one with a low B that sounds good - lots don't.

Honestly, I hardly ever do below Low D but the ability is there if I need it. But as a jazz player, the extra string gives me the needed span so I can walk all night without hardly changing position, except for the bridge.

I generally use a 5 fretted and 4 string fretless.

Downsides to a five: bigger neck so harder to handle, harder to slap, more effort to keep strings from rattling, switching back and forth from a 4 to 5 can be confusing,and that extra string is expensive.
