I think a good way to practice is to just turn on the radio and try to play whatever comes on right there on the spot. Don't worry about all the fancy licks at first, just practice finding the note by ear and grooving with the song. You don't have to know the name of the note, although it wouldn't hurt. When there's a part that's too difficult at first, just try to find your own way through what you can. Always remember that it's your job to LAY DOWN THE GROOVE. It doesn't have to be hard to do to sound cool. Most of the basslines on rock stations aren't that difficult. Often, they're real simple, but they work for the song...
This will really train your ear more than your hands, but I think that's gonna help more if you want to jam with bands. You'll be surprised how many bands would prefer a solid groover to a show off. Don't sweat the fancy stuff. The faster you can learn other people's songs, the more they will like jammin with you.
Also, get a metronome to check yourself. When you feel like you've learned a song, try playing it along with the metronome. It'll help you detect any spots that could use more work. Sometimes playing to a CD or radio you won't notice these things because of all the other music going on.If you're trying to learn a particular lick, slow the metronome down(if you have to) and make sure you hit all the notes. Then speed it back up. This should work better than repeated attemps to do it at full speed.
Good luck and have fun!
By the way, your post doesn't sound stupid at all... jim
