: O.K. Permit me to take this forum from music to science for a moment. Most of you know that Spring begins in the northern hemisphere tomorrow morning at
: 8:31 am Eastern Standard Time. And most of you may remember the little trick
: you can do with a raw egg: Balance it on its end. You can do this because the
: Sun is directly over the equator and its gravitational pull is equal at both
: poles allowing an object with a solid exterior and a liquid interior to balance
: on its end. No, you can't do it with a hard boiled egg. For added excitement,
: try balancing the egg on its pointy end on a mirror; it can be done. Also you don't have to wait for 8:31 am exactly; it will work right now, and up until
: about Wednesday night. Afterwards, make an omlet!

: I await your reports.

Not to burst anyone's bubble, but this can actually be done on any day of the year. Peter Lipton's comment "I would presume this would only work at 12 noon on the equator. the tilt of the earth's axis should interfere." Is actually somewhat correct. If anyone is interested, I checked around, and the link below( http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/misc/egg_spin.html ) has a great explanation of why this is. An egg can be balanced on it's end anytime of the year. The world record is some amazingly huge number (XXXX(X)) and was not done on an equinox, if memory serves (probably not well ;}) Anyway, enjoy your egg balancing...all year round!
