: Im in the process of finishing the works on my de fretting job, thus Fretless.. It has a solid maple neck, and im only applying a couple thin coats of urethane, this way i can still get the wood tones. Can anyone give me their advice on string, I mean I know round wounds will eat at the board, but Im really used to them, ive never played fretless, (well only at the stores) and the flat wounds eat at my fingers, or they just feel wierd..

: Flatwounds,is the sound that dramatic?
: roundwounds, on a fretless?

Hey Rob, what's up? This is a very subjective matter. I fall onto the flatwound
side for fretless, but that's just me. I've heard that roundwounds on a fretless
will start to chew the fingerboard pretty quickly, but, I've never used rounds on my fretless, so I honestly don't have any first hand experience with them.
There's also more of a difference between different brands of flats than between
different brands of rounds; at least that's what I've found. Any one agree? I mean, most roundwounds sound good to me while flats either sound good or terrible depending upon the maker. I still have the original Fender flats on my
Jazz(which I haven't been playing that much since I got the Casady) I have Rotosound Jazz Flats on the Casady, and they sound great, while flats on the Ibanez don't sound that good. I love the sound of a Musicman Stingray, but, can't imagine flats on that bass. You know what I mean? I think some basses sound good with flats while some don't; then some bases sound good with either.
Any opinions?

Good question Rob,
Mickster
