: Hey!
: I wanna start playin' bass (I'm into punk stuff)but i have no clue how to choose a proper bass and stuff... equipment.. and do i have to take lessons and stuff ?!please help me guys !!
: thanx a bunch !

Bob was right about nobody being able to tell you which bass is perfect for you. But I can say Fender Jazz Bass is a very common bass and you can't go too wrong if getting it. Many pros say in addition to your favorite bass everybody should have a Fender Jazz. So if you upgrade your bass later you won't want to let go of the Jazz completely.
Inspite the name it's not for jazz only, infact I rarely see it used in jazz, more in the rock groups. You can get the cheaper models quite cheap and they are still good quality.
Of course there's lot of things to consider and the Jazz Bass is only one suggestion but I wouldn't want you go and buy a Cort or a Samick just because your local dealer praised them (lied!) to you.

P.S. I don't have a Jazz Bass myself so I'm not just making myself feel good.
