: Hey!
: I wanna start playin' bass (I'm into punk stuff)but i have no clue how to choose a proper bass and stuff... equipment.. and do i have to take lessons and stuff ?!please help me guys !!
: thanx a bunch !

Well, first off, welcome to the wonderful world of bass. I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. :)
As to actually answering your question, there really isn't a substitute for going down to your local bass/guitar store and TRYING STUFF OUT. As far as inexpensive basses go, however, as everyone else already said, you probably won't go wrong with a Fender Jazz Bass (And the neck is only an inch and a half wide, perfect for smaller hands). Also, Ibanez makes good, inexpensive basses to play. I've heard mixed reports about Yamaha basses but most people here seem to give them a thumbs up (I've never played one myself).
As for taking lessons, absolutely, go as fast as you can! One of these days I'll have to get off my butt and go get some lessons for myself.
Hope this helped...
