Unless you're used to doing your own tech work, I'd suggest taking it to a reputable BASS repairman. (Some guitar repairmen don't know the intricacies of the bass) The problem may be as simple as adjusting the tension rod in the neck or adjusting the bridge height. Or it may be fixed by having the frets either replaced (if worn too much) or dressed if too high. If you value your bass, it will be well worth the cost.
