I'd say it's not so much writing bass lines as *creating* bass lines that makes all the difference. Learn the basic bass patterns (i.e., walking line), and then figure out where to go from there.

As far as theory, it's kind of a double-edged sword; if you're planning on studying jazz or classical, you'll want a good background in theory, but for something like rock, blues, country, etc., a basic understanding should probably suffice.
