Marc,as sugested,car wax is a great way to protect a solid color gloss finish.Turtle Wax makes a wax with Teflon called Turtle Wax Plus that resists smuges quite well.I also wax the neck to improve the smoothness and feel.
Fine scratches can be removed by using a fine auto polishing compound followed by the regular car wax and a good buffing with a cloth.
You could also try using those car waxes with the coloring(black)in the wax though usally more expensive but probably a good investment .
