New life into a tired old bass

I've got a 1980 Kimbara Jazz copy. It sounds pretty muffled now and short of going to a technician I'd like to get it usable as a spare.

Is it likely to just be the tone controls dying or could the pickups be going? The pickups have a non-standard mounting - a single screw at the top and bottom instead of a true J pickup mounting. Is it possible to just replace the pickup inside the cover?

I'm very competent with a soldering iron but not so hot on fault finding. Any tips on diagnosing the problems would be great (I have a digital multimeter but no access to an oscilloscope).

Cheers,
Mike.
