: I started playing bass like 6 months ago. I got a squire start up kit type thing to start, but I think I might want to "expand" so to speek. Should the first thing I think about replacing be my amp or my guitar?

First I'd like to be dull and ask if you really need new equipment, cuz if you don't you might as well save the money and buy something later when you know better what you want. I mean, my opinion on what kind of a bass I'd need has changed many times.
That said, I think you should get what you need. If you're starting in a band you'll probably need a new amp first but if you just play at home you might want a new bass to be inspired more. Then again some Squires are quite good and you may be fine with it for years.
With the little information you gave, if I had to recommend one or the other, I would say you should buy an amp.
Buying new gear is always fun and interesting but you can get mixed with all the different options. So gladly ask on the board for information on gear, you could tell us for instance what type of a sound you're looking for and I would be happy to give you information on what is commenly used and what is not in different types of situations.
