: Dear Stew:I am speaking of basses with double courses, tuned E-A-D-G with pairs of strings in octaves. The first one I saw was made by Hagstrom back in the 1970's. Carol Robelli(SamAsh)and Dean recently offered 8-strings;I wanted to see if anyone thought they were worth using,or if an octave doubling stomp box would do the same thing.

I've never played an 8-string, so I'm not necessarily the guy to talk to.
That said I'll add that you must play with a pick I can't imagine you could use your fingers with it. That puts me off right away, but that's beside the point, if I have one at all. You must have a lot of extra cash because you can't really have that as your only bass, but then again one guy had a 12-string as his only bass (string in groups of 3). But he said that nobody in his band really likes the bass for too long, it puts your stomach upside down.
