: Anyone out there have any experience with 8 string basses?

I just bought a Ferndandes "Gravity-8" 8 string, tuned in octaves.
This thing is a real MONSTER. If you've never played one, you owe
it to yourself to check one out. I use this bass in a Classic Rock
cover trio, it really helps to fill out the sound of the band. I can't
use it on every song, it's not good for everything. The bass really
sounds better played with pick and does it's thing best below the
7th fret; it's not really meant for flashy fast playing, but it
lays down a bottom end sound that is just HUGE. 8 string basses
work best with bi-amped, x'd-over systems, you won't get the full
advantage of them thru a combo amp or single cabinet.
The Carlo Robelli 8 string is a low quality instrument, I'd stay
away from that; any good 8 string will run around a thousand dollars
new, you can read my review of the Gravity 8 on Harmony Central.
Cheers,
