: I play an active spector bass but have recently picked up a Fender Precision.
: I'm finding that the Fender has a great low end but is a bit "Hollow" sounding. There just isn't any cut through the mix growl I get with my spector.
: Would anyone recommend I replace the stock P-pickups with active? or should I install a J-pickup (if that's possible)?
: OR should I suck it up and learn to appreciate the sound as is?
: Any advice would be great. I've been playing a while, but I'm as techy as a rubber band.
Pete, Fender makes some great vintage '62 P-Bass pick-ups. Also S. Duncan makes some called "Quarter Pounders" that are louder than regular pasive pick-ups, but are passive themselves. One thing you can do to help with the low end boom is wire them up with a 500K volume pot. This will allow a little more of the highs to get through as 250K pots tend to roll off the highs. peace....John
