Become one with the metronome.

Seriously, practice getting the piece dead perfect and clean at a slower than comfortable metronome setting. Concentrate on feeling the groove and getting all the nuances. If necessary, have the metronome beat on eights, or even sixteenths if required.

Then GRADUALLY work the metronome speed up.

If you loose the feel or just play it sloppy, then back the setting down.

It may take several days to get to the tempo you want, but you will get there, I promise.

If your picking hand is weak, try working out with Rocco Prestia stuff like "What is Hip". If your funk or sense of time needs a tune-up, then get a hold of the James Jamerson tribute "In the Shadow of Motown" and be prepared to spend some serious woodsheddin time.

My fave for warming up with the metronome is Jaco's "Teen Town".

Women and Rhythmn section first!
