ah. well, what I know is this: the octaver/octave dividing pedal don't really do the same thing since they emphasize the note an octave (or two octaves) LOWER than the note you're playing. the type of 8-string you're talking about plays the note an octave HIGHER (or in unison) than the one you're playing. back in the early 80s someone made a pedal that emphasized either direction, but I haven't seen one in ages. you could probably use a harmonizing pedal to do roughly the same thing, but most of the ones I've tried had a weird tinny, computerized sound.
