If the problems is with the left hand :
- Try playing at other parts of the fretboard/ play on other strings.
- Will there be fret 5s that can be played on an open string instead? (While Dream Theater may choose to play up & down along the same string to keep the tone consistent, well, I'm not that good yet :)
- If it really doesn't work.... well.... I guess E-E-Bb-E-E-C-E-E-C# doesn't sound too far from E-F-Bb-E-F-C-E-F-C#. I do that on the E string when I'm too tired.
If the problem is with the right hand :
- minimise your finger movements, & don't move more than you need to. Look into a mirror: does your finger movements seem out of proportion with the volume/ power/ density of the song? Or you can ask your friends whether you look weird.
In general :
While you have spent time on left-pressing fast & right-picking fast, did you practise releasing fast as well? By releasing I mean the process of fingers leaving the strings. Releasing (both left & right fingers) involve another set of muscles.
