As for string distance from pickup:
1. too close will mean the magnet inside the pickup will drag your string and stop its vibration sooner, ie. less sustain.
2. too far obviously will mean insufficient input & output.
(You have to use your ears here cuz pickups vary).


As for string distance from frets, I'm just copying out of my Ibanez SR manual for your reference:

1. between strings & FRET (NB. not fretboard):
treble side = 2.5mm
bass side = 3.0mm
