Anyone know what might be wrong with my amp?

I have a huge, 210-watt Peavey bass amp and I love it to death. Problem is, just recently (last two months or less, I don't know for sure) it started acting funny. It would play perfectly for about half an hour, maybe more, then it's like the sensitivity went down or something. If I played really softly it wouldn't pick it up anymore, unless I hit the string hard and then it would pick up the soft stuff for about five seconds, and then cut out again. After ten minutes or so of that, it'll start to snap, crackle, and pop, and then stop entirely. It takes an hour or so before it's back to normal. My thoughts are as follows:
1. cat hair in the vent holes. We have a huge cat who likes to sit on the amp. Solution? Take the cover off and vacuum inside, I guess.
2. amp broken. not cool at all, it's a $600 amp.
3. ??? If anyone has an idea, or it happened to you, please email me since I'm not online very often. Thanks for your time!
