Thanks Pete. I guess my problem is a lack of practice time. To be really honest, we only have time to practice about once a week. The guys in my band are mostly older guys in their late 40's and early 50's and they played together back in the day so they have mental song lists of hundreds of songs. I myself am 31, so my point of reference is different. During our "practice" sessions, we rarely play the same song more than a few times just to make sure everyone knows their part. They don't neccessarily need me on vocals, but I want to be able to expand my game - so to speak.
Most of the songs are country, rock or blues and as such I just jump on a walking bass rythm that works for that song and go with it. I can pick up a bass run pretty easily by ear, but... the comfort level isn't there for me to sing backup even if I know the song really well from hearing it for years.
Oh well, I guess I answered my own question! I just need to get them to nail down a specific song rotation so I can work on getting that comfort level to the point that I know what I'm doing BEFORE I do it. What a concept! :)
