The heavier the string, the 'fuller' the sound. This is not neccessarily an advantage. The contemporary bass sound is different than that big, bassy sound of the Sixties. I find that a mid-gauge roundwound gives a punchy, tight middle, a sharply defined top-end, and enough bottom without getting 'muddy'.

Anyway, what exactly changes as you crank up the volume? And what amp/speakers (and bass) are you using? Does it happen with different basses?

: I get a sound out of my amp that I dig at lower volumes. But when I turn it up I seem to loose this sound. What can I do? Also, can someone give me a run down of the characteristics of the different string guage sets? Thanx
