You have active electronics on your bass. This means your bass has a pre-amp in it which boosts the signal of your pickups and to put it simply allows the EQ knobs on your bass to have a bigger effect on the sound than passive electronics - those without batteries.
I owned an active bass years ago and it had a switch that allowed you to by-pass the active electronics so you could keep playing if your battery dies. I'm not sure if this is a common feature. You should also check to see if leaving your bass plugged in drains your battery even when you are not playing.
