: I got my hands on an old pickup that has a couple of wires disconnected. There is a red, as whit and a black one, and there is no name on the pick up. Is there some rule of thumb i should be following in trying to rewire it, or is there a good web resource that can help me?

>>>Hi Louis..

Sounds like you've got a fairly common color codes there,
Most likely the white goes to the tone pot, the red to the
volume, and the black to ground. Don't assume that's correct
until you've checked things out first, There are many different
pickup manufacturers and they don't all use the same colors
for the same things. I would recommend checking out some of the
websites for like, Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, Bartolini, etc.
Sounds like you've got a Fender type passive pickup there,
Their "vintage" pickups use wiring that generally follow the
originals, and they have some diagrams there you can check out.

Cheers,
