I can't say about the Mex P-bass, but I have a Mex J-bass that is a very good instrument for the price (I paid $299 for it). I tried both the Mexican and the American before I bought, and the Mex sounded as good, and IMHO it played better than the American made one. I would definately recommend the Mexican Fenders, they cost half as much and are very good quality. A lot of people think they aren't as good, but I believe most of them never tried them with an open mind. Also, the salesman in the store recommended the Mex over the American, even though he would get less commission!

: I am a guitarist but I frequently record my own bass tracks in my home studio. I am tired of borrowing basses and was thinking of purchasing a Fender P-Bass and I don't want to spend a lot of $$$$ (would like to stay around $300).

: Which one should I buy or look for as there are so many variations (I am not opposed to used or new)? I have seen the Mexican P-Basses for around $300 new. Are they any good? I remember my friends Squire copies or Strats and Teles were pretty awful. Sound (rather than playability) are most important as it will only be used for recording mostly simple bass parts. Thanks.
