Any bass (regardless of size) that sounds good enough to practice on will do. I have a Mini-Bass built from a kit I got from Stewart-McDonald a few years ago. Overall length is about 27" and has pretty good sound (once I put new EMG's in it) and weighs about 2 pounds. Great for on the road. I also use a Peavey MicroBass amp. About a foot square and 8" deep with a very good sound for an 8" speaker. Also has a headphone out for those pesky motel guests... check it out at your nearest Peavey dealer.
