The recommendations for Yamaha and Stingray are both excellent (but pricey). So does Tobias, etc Ibanez makes some less expensive 5 strings that are good value.
I have a Ibanez SR405 ($420) which has good tone esp. the B but weak pickups and hisses under fluorescents. Plan to change out pickups with Bartolinis. The string spacing on this instrument is tight, which is a big advantage if you have small hands.
The Fender V's I have played in the store have all been pretty poor.
This all said, go spend a few hours in a big music store where you can compare different instruments. Ask permission to bring in your own amp and effects so you will know how YOU will sound.
Final thought - I might risk buying a 4 string on name value alone, but never a 5 string. Seems like a lot of variation between the sound on the low B on identical instruments - don't know why.
