I take bass playing seriously inasmuch as trying not to make mistakes, but that far and no further. Years ago I used to take it TOO seriously, always comparing myself to Stanley Clarke or some other top player, and guess what? I couldn't hold a candle to them. It was a pretty stupid way of looking at music, but I was a dumb kid. Now, I'm a dumb adult! All kidding aside, now I play without any pressure, and that's the way I think you should approach anything in life. If it's not fun or mind soothing, why would any one do anything? We all have to get up in the morning; that should be the limit of involuntary actions.
