Paul himself said once that he didn't consider himself to be a great bass player. And he still don't know how to read notes, and don't know how to find them on the fingerboard, nor does hoe know anything about scales and modes (according to himself). So, he deffinetly lack in the theoretical area, but he has played alot (consider all the albums and tours and practise and so on) so I bet he's pretty good. But then again, so would probably anyone be that has put the same amount of time into playing as he has.
One thought though, is that when you ask this kind of questions you will mostly hear what people think of the music, not the abilities.
Especially when you ask about someone like Paul, since Beatles have had an effect on almost everyone.
If you ask about a noname, you'll probably get a more accurate answer ;)
And lastly, does it matter? If you like Beatles, play beatles becous you like it, not becous the bassplayer is good or bad.
I have more respect for the people who play Blink 187 becous they like the tunes, eventhough they are no-brainers, then the ones who play jazz becous they want it to be complicated to impress.
Sure, I know, it's not as clear cut as that (I play things I dislike aswell for the practise, becous it is hard, not good) but you get the principal of my meaning I hope ;)
: i wonder what you think about Paul Mccartneys Bass playing ??
