Recently, a bass player by the name of John Myung came to my attention. He is, of course, the bass player for the rock band, Dream Theater. He has a gnarly style...he's really heavy into three-finger fingerstyle rock. On their most recent album, "Scenes From a Memory", he does a bass solo that I never thought or dreamed possible of any rock player. He is extremely fast with chops that could kill a shark, and his knowledge of theory and technique are extremely impressive as well. Even if you're not into heavy progressive rock, he's worth checking out.
Another cat that is worth checking out is Kim Stone of The Rippingtons. Although his style is a bit more straight-forward, the grooves he creates with the Rippingtons are absolutely cool. His bass is nice and fat, and he's a fantastic player.
