: i'm *determined* to learn to play bass...i've loved bass for a long time now, and i've finally decided to learn to play...but, i've never even touched a bass..so i need the really basic basics...i need one to learn on, but i don't have much money at all, because i only have a summer job (i'm 16)...i'm not in a band (YET! heheh..) so i don't need a big amp thing i don't think...i was also wondering if it's possible to just learn by yourself, because where i live, i don't know where i could get guitar lessons of any kind. any kind of help you guys can give me would be great :) thanks

: p.s. - the type of music i want to play is alternative(creed like) and/or rock...maybe a bit of punk, if thats of any importance at all...

I read over what "A" mentioned and he's right on. But I'd like to add a few items worth considering:
Learn Theory! Sure it might be fairly easy to pick out the parts of other songs if you have a good ear and a good sense of timing and you may even be able to come up with some killer bass parts for new songs in a group you will be joining, BUT nothing feels better than for someone to write their own parts based on theory. When the songwiter of the group (maybe even you) says, "Ok guys here are the changes for this new tune," without even having heard the changes, you'll have an idea of what your part may be just because you know what part you will be playing based on theory. You'll know what you're playing and why.
Second thing, learn to read music manuscript as well as tab. If you don't know how to read either, than learning manuscript is no harder than tab. I don't read tab because I was fortunate enough to have been taught to read manuscript at an early age by my mother. There's nothing wrong with tab but there aren't as many charts written in tab as manuscript. There are other benefits over tab but if you can't read manuscript then they won't mean anything to you. Besides, it's like knowing two languages and that can't be bad!
Good luck, Dave
