: I have been playing bass for a few months now and I'm having trouble getting muted strings to sound right. When I listen to a song with muted notes and I try to play along, my muted notes sound way different. I think I am doing it wrong. Basically what I do is apply a little bit of pressure to a string with my left hand and then pluck it. Can someone explain the proper technique for muting strings?
Try fretting with the first or second finger and simultaneously lightly place the third and fourth fingers against the strings.
Rocco Prestia frets mostly with just the second finger.
Alternately, you can just half depress the string against the fret, but this doesnt work as well, because of the tendency to sound harmonics, especially at the seventh fret.
