: I've had my bass for about a year and when i play the strings make a rattling sound. Is this normal or do i need to get some new strings or something?
Could be several things... Check to see if the grooves in the nut are not too wide. Next, check to see if there is any bowing in the neck. The bowing could be the strings buzzing on the frets. Adjust the truss rod if necessary. Check the bridge. Some bridges (like the Fender type) have several set screws that adjust the height of the saddles. The screws on each saddle should have some pressure on them. Last, check the strings themselves. You didn't say whether or not they are the same strings that were on the bass since last year. Ocassionally, they may start to unwrap just enough the throw things off. New bass strings aren't as inexpensive as guitar strings but the investment is well worth it. Good luck, Dave
