: I'm just starting to play live, and I'm debating whether to run a direct line to the board or mic up a 2x10. Does anyone have any advice? And if you use a mic, which brand/model?
this is gonna sound like something obvious, I know, but if you can afford it, try doing both. Both techniques have their advantages and disadvantages, and recommending one over the other, in abstract, wouldn't be too wise. You should consider all the circumstances that surround every particular situation (i.e., an overly boomy room, bad acoustics, stage and venue size/shape, etc.). Then there´s the issue of wether you get a personal sound from your amp/cabs/effects that you may want to keep in the house mix ...or not.
All things considered, if I were you I'd talk the sound man into trying both approaches and run a line from a DI box (or your amp's direct line) AND another line from a miked cab. It's a hassle and the soundman will probably curse, but believe me, it's worth it.
Buena suerte and keep your bass up front in the mix,
