I would suggest you learn the main scales - major, minor, and because it rocks, the blues scale. These, once learned, can be moved up and down the neck to suit the key. If you can figure out what key a piece is in, apply that scale to it. Trust me, it'll make jamming with mate much more fun if you can improvise a little.
You also should start writing your own songs, even if they suck a lot. It'll help your understanding of music without actually doing theory.
